A2 (42 x 59.5 cm) acrylic on board
by Eldest Sonshine, age 15
Simple and achingly-beautiful.
A solitary boat with a striped blue and pink background depicting the sea and sky.
The background was painted first, then after a while of looking at it Max said to me "boat". So I asked him if he wanted to paint a boat and he said "Yes, boat". So I found a photo of one online and he copied it with such delicacy of brushwork it actually made me cry a little.
What is amazing about this - other than the incredible accuracy of the boat and its shadows! - is that it was painting on a day of very severe, painful, debilitating Tourettes tics for Max. He had barely slept, barely eaten, barely had a moments rest for his body for days. He was yawning while painting and had to stop to allow tics to pass before carrying on. I was not expecting him to ask to paint on this day or that he would be able to hold the brush to do what he wanted to do, but look.
It's melancholy, a bit lonely maybe and also amazingly beautiful.
